Our rotating gallery wall has a new resident, and we think you’ll want to see it in person.
Starting this week, the café is showing original work by local artist Stephen Douglas. Bold, layered abstracts built from loose washes of gold, turquoise, red, and green that read differently depending on where you’re standing and what kind of day you’re having.
Here’s how he describes what he’s after, in his own words:
“On a daily basis we are bathed in the splendor of our natural world. Images we never tire of, we hunger for, that take our breath away! Perhaps it’s a full moon or a star filled sky, sunrise or sunset, lying in a field watching big fluffy clouds roll by. It is both a personal and universal experience shared by all who live on this planet. Imagery that sticks in the mind and moves the soul, yet cannot be reproduced; each a special moment in time. It is my hope that as you view my art you will have a similar experience. A moment when you think ‘I like that, I am not sure why, I just enjoy looking at this.’ For me, that is a successful work of art. Enjoy!!”
- Stephen Douglas
That’s really the whole pitch: no explanation needed, just a reaction. Come have one of your own.
Opening reception: Friday, September 11th, 5–8pm at 508 S 5th St. The espresso bar will be open, the gallery wall will be full, and there’s no cover, no RSVP, no pressure. Just stop by on your way through downtown, grab a coffee, and see the work up close.
Hope to see you Friday.
